Scout Exchange Program

The Scout International Student Exchange Program (SISEP), provides Venturer Scouts (15-17 years of age) the opportunity to experience life and Scouting in a different culture to our own by spending about 7-8 weeks of your summer holiday in either Denmark, Japan or the United Kingdom. Alternatively, your Family could Host a Venturer Scout from one of these countries for a period of 6-8 weeks during July / August and showing them a typical Scouting Family and the Australian way of life.

Opportunities exist each year for Queensland to participate as a SISEP Exchange Participant staying with a Scouting Family in your choice of either Denmark, Japan or the United Kingdom. Departures are usually around the end of November, returning mid January, so you get to experience a northern winter and Christmas/New Year with your Host Family. You will get to experience family life, school and scouting in your Host Country and make lots of new friends. You will pick up new skills and ideas. You will be encouraged to make presentations on your life in Australia and exchange program ideas.

Every experience is different for each participant and everyone is encouraged to get the most out of the once in a lifetime experience. No one has returned home disappointed from their experience and have all stated it was the best time of their life so far.

Some of the activities you could participate in are as follows:

Denmark:

  • Visit the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen
  • Ice skating on the frozen rivers near your Host Families home
  • Camping in the snow or in barns
  • Attend Scout SCOPE (4 day International Camp – very popular)

Japan:

  • Visit Japanese Shrines and Gardens
  • Ride the Bullet Train
  • Attend various Scout section meetings (get mobbed by Joey Scout equivalent)

UK:

  • Visit Gilwell Park and / or Brownsea Island
  • Caving under snow covered hills
  • Help your group fundraise for Christmas Charities dressed as a reindeer

For those going to Denmark and the United Kingdom, you will also spend about 4 days sightseeing around London with the other exchange participants at the end of your exchange staying in London.

The cost for this experience varies from $2,500 to $3,130 (based on 2013/14 figures). This covers airfares, insurance and contingent fee. This may appear a lot, but all previous participants have said it was worth it. The earlier you decide to participate in this experience, the more time you will have to save over time or even fundraise.

In 2015, Indonesia is being added as another exchange destination.
