In 1967/1968, for the first time in Queensland History the Centenary Suburbs, Brisbane, was inundated with around 16,000 Boy Scouts from 19 countries to participate in the 8th Australian Scout Jamboree. They were spread wide across the land with many suburbs, in particular Jamboree Heights and streets named in this event’s honour. For many a Jamboree is the pinnacle of Scouting as they are away from home taking responsibility for themselves and meeting others from around the world. The atmosphere created by a Jamboree is electric and one that many remember for the rest of their lives.

2018 will be the 50th anniversary of the first Queensland Jamboree. The celebration to mark this milestone will be held at the Jamboree Heights Scout Den, Wood Park on Saturday 13th January 2018.

On this day, we hope to showcase scouting, provide a glimpse into what a Jamboree is about and showcase our local business and community with pride due to their support and assistance that enabled the Jamboree to occur and Scouts to thrive. We will have business and community stalls as well as demonstrations from talented local groups including the Scouts.

We will also unveil the restored memorial stone that provides a permanent monument to Queensland’s first Jamboree and marks our page in history. In addition, we will plant a time capsule so that future generations can be reminded of what a significant milestone this was and that they too can share in the austerity and excitement of what this has meant to thousands of members of the Scouting movement.

We are hoping to have as many of the original Scouts (campers) to a special afternoon tea and ask anyone that was there or knows anyone that was there to please get in touch with Penny on 0409 227 386 or 50yearcelebration@jindaleescouts.org.au.

We are starting to search for volunteer help to make the day a success. If there are any Scouts, Venturer Scouts or Rovers who need to gain service hours please contact Penny. Many hands make things a great success.

Keep the 13th January 2018 in your diary to help celebrate our part in this great city.
