Rudd Cup – 98 Years

Rudd Cup is a yearly Scout camp that has been running for 98 years. It was held on the weekend of 28 April – 1 May at Seeonee Park. It spanned three nights, providing Scouts (11 to 14 years) and Venturer Scouts (15 to 17 years) of the Capricorn District with an experience they’ll never forget.

With six patrols competing from the Mount Archer, Yeppoon, Gracemere and Warripari Scout Groups, over 60 youth members and leaders were in attendance.

Rudd Cup is a competition camp that puts a Scout and their patrols skills to the test. With minimal leader intervention, Scouts have to set up their campsite, cook, clean, maintain hygiene and organise themselves without prompting by leaders. Each patrol is judged on their skill and teamwork, with one winner taking the trophy back to their den at the end of the event.

Outdoor adventure skill activities are conducted across the weekend and support from the older Venturer Scouts is welcomed. The Venturer Scouts are responsible for teaching the younger Scouts the skills they need to succeed as Scouts.

This year’s winners were the Mount Archer Scout Group patrol, and the runners up being the patrol from Warripari Scout Group.

The Skits and Giggles trophy is also up for grabs and goes to the patrol with the best campfire skit which is judged on creativity, originality and delivery. District Commissioner, Nyree Johnson, had the tough task this year of assessing each act and this year the trophy went to Yeppoon Scout Group.

Gracemere Scout Group entered two patrols this year and received a pat on the back for a job well done.

The Rudd Cup was established in 1925 and will soon celebrate its 100th year in 2025. Only after another much-anticipated event in 2024.

St John’s Woods Scouts at Eprapah

Our St Johns Wood Scout Unit attended an environmental education day organised by Queensland’s only Scout Centre of Excellence for Nature and the Environment (SCENE).

We were fortunate to have two passionate and experienced Leaders, Koala and Iroquois, who served as our guides and  educators. At the Centre, we discovered several of the native species of plant and animals that live in this unique habitat. We also had the opportunity to clear invasive species of plants and replace them with native trees.

The best part of the day was when we tried to catch fish in Eprapah Creek and were able to land a Tilapia fish, an unwanted invasive species. We concluded our amazing day by pond dipping and examining organisms that live in this habitat. We not only had a fantastic time, but also were able to take away many valuable skills from the experience, and now understand how important it is, as Scouts, to protect and preserve our environment.

Jimboomba Scout Group Community Open Day

Jimboomba Scout Group opened their doors to demonstrate scouting to the public.

We had a great turnout and the event was a success thanks to the leadership at Jimboomba, youth members also ran a coffee van supported by Thom & Ann’s. Youth members ran camp fire scones and helped guests fire our ballista. Great fun was had by the public that attended.
