HAPPY NEW YEAR AND AUSTRALIA DAY

On behalf of my Team I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year. We would also like to wish you and your families’ health and happiness this Australia Day as we celebrate everything this great nation has to offer. Australia Day is about recognising how lucky we are to live in this great country. On this day we acknowledge our past, recognise what it means to be an Australian and strive to create a better future for generations to come.

OPENING AND CLOSING PARADES

I would like to start the new year off with a discussion regarding opening and closing parades. I have written about this a few times over the years and I am still amazed to find Mobs still doing the old parade format or variations off of the new. Reviewing the ceremonies book I have noticed they have taken out a picture depicting the formation of the parade. With a view of assisting new and existing Leaders with an understanding of the required format I have researched and been able to find a version (showing the format of an Opening and Closing Parade) which I believe will be helpful (see below). I hope this helps, contact me through my BC email address if you have any further questions regarding parades.

MINUTE CHALLENGES

There are times when there is a spare moment between a game, a craft, while waiting for the next activity or just before closing parade when you want to keep the Joey Scouts busy, following are some one minute challenges you may wish to try with your Mob:

Minute Challenge

  • Joey Scouts in pairs roll the ball between them. Count how many times they can do this in a minute.  Tie their shoes. Joey Scouts are challenged to tie their shoes as many times as they can in the time?
  • Increase the size of the Joey Scout groups. If this is not enough, challenge them to take the shoes off and put them back on again.
  • How many times can they repeat a tongue twister in the minute? (Keep the tongue twister simple)
  • Something you always wanted to know — how many tiles on the floor of the room? What about ceiling tiles or concrete blocks in a wall?.
