National Mountain Bike Instructor Development Program

Can you promote this date 12th and 13th of May 2018 with your teams, and see who may be interested, It’s  a Great opportunity to prepare for the OAS and get your team in place.

Scouts Qld is looking to host a Mountain Bike Instructor Development Program in 2018.

We are planning for this to occur on the weekend of 12th and 13th of May 2018.

We are going to base the program at the Rocky Creek Campsite just north of Brisbane in Landsborough.

We are going to run a MTB Level 1 Program on the Saturday and then use the Sunday for specific Instructor Skill Development .

Hire Bikes will be available from Scouts Qld at a fee for people flying in.

An estimated cost for the weekend would be around $120 a person as we need to cover costs for a external training provider.

This email is for the Date Claimer and more details will be provided as we make further arrangements.

If you have any specific questions, please contact Pete Gould – Branch Commissioner – Adventurous Activities – Scouts Qld – pkglgould@bigpond.com

National Alpine School in winter 2018

Given the inclusion of Alpine in the OAS, this will be an ideal opportunity for Branches to get some key people qualified to assist with the rollout. Please give some consideration to who may be best suited in your Branch to attend. Victoria will host the event, and some basic details are listed below.

Dates:                   31st August  to the 5th September 2018

Location:              Mount Stirling, Victoria (near Mansfield)

Cost:                      expected to be $400-$600, depending on which stream participants choose

Objectives:         The School is designed to assess Leaders and Rovers for:

– Level 1/2 day ski touring;
– Level 2/(3?) overnight ski touring; and
– Level 2 snowshoeing/Level 3 alpine bushwalking.
– It will also cover selected elements of the YPR’s alpine Outdoor Adventure Skills where they (i) are difficult to complete on an individual basis and (ii) fit within the School program.
Program outline: three days/two nights out on Mount Stirling covering movement skills, navigation, leadership, emergencies, shelters, and snow camping (with day tour leaders in semi-permanent tent accommodation); followed by a major day trip.

Dates
This is basically driven by the availability of Alpine Camp, which is the only on-snow accommodation which allows the day tourers to stay out with the overnight streams:

Friday, 31st August: meet at Mansfield Backpackers (this is not an ideal venue, but Mansfield Scout Hall is unavailable, and I don’t have a better alternative).

Saturday September 1st/Sunday 2nd: Alpine Camp at Mt Stirling (day tourers) or snow camping (overnight tourers and mountain craft stream).

Monday 3rd/Tuesday 4th: Waiere Lodge, Booroolite

Wednesday 5th: return home
Details of the School can be seen at https://scoutsvictoria.com.au/alpineschool and we’re currently asking for expressions of interest, which will close at the end of March.
